The pictures in this section document the construction of the final length of the M65 between Preston and Blackburn. This page outlines its history: why is there a motorway from Preston to Colne, and why is it one of the UK’s newer routes? Most of Lancashire’s modern roads can be traced back to a single document written by one man: the Highway Plan for Lancashire, a hefty book full of maps published in , and written by the county’s Surveyor and Bridgemaster, Sir James Drake – the man often remembered today as the father of the motorway network. The M65 is the exception. Drake never envisaged an east-west route linking Preston to Blackburn, Burnley and Colne; he was mainly focussed on links between Manchester and Liverpool, and connecting Lancashire’s other major towns to those two cities. It wasn’t until the s that a report was commissioned with the intention of improving connections to North East Lancashire, and it recommended the construction of an “east-west fast route”, a dual three-lane motorway from Preston towards the Pennines. The road to nowhere: the M65 in splendid isolation on a AA route planner. Click to enlarge. It took a decade for the project to get under way, partly because it was the first to be subjected to a new method of public involvement in the design process. The first section of brand-new M65 opened in near Burnley, and through the decade another four short lengths were completed, creating a strange route from Blackburn to Colne that locals called the “road to nowhere”.

But rather than calling up a specialist opener like Steve Titchard, Lancashire are set to promote Crawley to partner young Nathan Wood, creating the space for Graham Lloyd to return lower down the order. Crawley is no novice to facing the new ball. He was a regular opener in his days at Manchester Grammar School and Cambridge University, and has gone in first a few times for Lancashire, although not in the Championship for two years.

A decision date on two proposed exploration sites for shale gas will be next year as more consultation is needed, a council said today. Energy firm Cuadrilla is seeking planning permission to drill, hydraulically fracture and test the flow of gas from up to four exploration wells across two sites in the Fylde area of west Lancashire. Councillors at Lancashire County Council are set to make a decision on both applications, with drilling likely to start several months later if approved and the fracking to follow.

Planners had already agreed with Cuadrilla that the application at Roseacre Wood in Inskip would be decided by January 31 and have now also agreed that the application for Preston New Road, Little Plumpton, will be decided by the same date. It had previously been agreed that the Preston New Road application would be decided by December Lancashire County Council will hold a further consultation to allow for representations on the further information to be made. It suspended test drilling in June , following two earthquakes in the area in April and May of that year, one with a magnitude of 2.

The epicentre was thought to be about yards away from a well in Weeton, Lancashire. Hundreds of protesters attended a six-day Reclaim The Power camp in August near the proposed Little Plumpton site to campaign against shale gas extraction in the region by the controversial process. What was it all about? The night Adam was killed he was trying to act as a peacemaker. His only mistake was trying to keep a young man away from the area where his friend was being attacked. The steps that led up to the incident were very basic and so senseless. Carl spoke to a girl outside a club, just friendly chat.

There was almost a fight not involving Adam but Adam and his friends walked away. They went to a takeaway and as they came out the other group were walking towards them. Adam and his other friend Chris tried to keep the other two away from the fight trying to protect their friend. The young man who eventually killed Adam did not like being kept away from the fight, and as Adam tried to shepherd him away he stopped, turned and hit Adam in the face.

The punch was so hard it knocked Adam out before he hit the ground. This meant he could not break his fall and the fatal damage was done as his head hit the ground. Adam died a few hours later at the hospital. A senseless death for nothing — just macho posturing and too much drink.
