If toxic people were an ingestible substance, they would come with a high-powered warning and secure packaging to prevent any chance of accidental contact. Sadly, families are not immune to the poisonous lashings of a toxic relationship. Though families and relationships can feel impossibly tough at times, they were never meant to ruin. For the most part though, they will feel nurturing and life-giving to be in.
Toxic people thrive on control. Everything they do is to keep people small and manageable. It is likely that toxic people learned their behaviour during their own childhood, either by being exposed to the toxic behaviour of others or by being overpraised without being taught the key quality of empathy. They come with a critical failure to see past their own needs and wants.
Toxic people have a way of choosing open, kind people with beautiful, lavish hearts because these are the ones who will be more likely to fight for the relationship and less likely to abandon. Non-toxic people who stay in a toxic relationship will never stop trying to make the relationship better, and toxic people know this. They count on it.

How to Date Someone in Alcoholics Anonymous (When You’re Not)
Hello Everyone. I am writing in this forum because I started dating a guy a few months ago and things were going really well then he started to pull away. I questioned him on this and he ultimately came clean with the fact that he is currently in AA and working on his 12 steps and has been discouraged by his sponsor to date. I knew going into it that he used to drink and smoke and no longer does, this was one of the things that I like about him because I don’t do drugs and have not had a drink in about 5 months- I am not an alcoholic I just really do not enjoy drinking and I feel much healthier without it so I often cut it out of my diet completely.
I understand that his recovery is the most important thing here, and I’ve made it clear to him that I fully support him and really respect what he’s doing. From what I’ve heard before from other friends in programs and as my guy’s sponsor said, people in AA are not supposed to date for at least the first year. He says he’s been accused of “void filling” and doesn’t want it to be like that with me. He has also told me that him entering the program is the reason he broke up with his ex I believe they dated for about 2 years.
He’s told me that he basically wants to cool it on the dating but still keep me in his life.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group Sadag has partnered with the Department of Social Development in launching a toll-free substance abuse helpline in an effort to increase access to help, support and appropriate treatment for substance users. Sadag project director Janine Shamos said that many people were marginalised or at risk due to their life-circumstances and were made more vulnerable through drug use.
She added that substance abuse was a major problem in the country and that users were getting younger all the time, and that there was the need for youth empowerment and for youngsters to take control of their lives and not let drugs control them. AA has done such a good job of selling alcoholism as an uncontrollable disease, I commend you for not dating primarily fellow recovering alcoholics. honesty, she chose to say it was my issue for brining this guy reaching out up to her.
The new site update is up! Normally I’m okay with having this conversation after getting to know someone over a few months, but I’m uncertain as to whether or not I should tell her sooner considering that alcoholism in her family has come up as a topic of conversation. I just started dating someone new and there is a lot of great chemistry between us.
We have been on three dates. On our most recent date I told her, “I don’t drink anymore, I feel better when I don’t. Later in our conversation, unrelated to this, she told me about someone in her family she is very close to who has been struggling to stay sober, working an AA program, and experiencing some significant health problems.
When I am getting to know someone new I usually like to wait a while sometimes several months before I go into details about my experience drinking, getting sober, and the support I get from AA. It’s very personal and I never know how people might react. However, given her recent experience with alcoholism and the family connection to AA, I am wondering if it makes sense to tell her now on our fourth date.
It feels weird that we’re having conversations about AA and that she doesn’t know about my experience. My AA friends are unanimously telling me that I should disclose this information to her ASAP — both because it is the most honest thing to do and it would be weird when it comes up later and because my experience may be able to be helpful to her.
